Oral Cancer Screening

Diagram depicting different potential locations of oral cancer Having an oral cancer screening is a way of detecting oral issues early on. Dental checkups are vital for not only dental cleanings and dental exams, but to detect issues like oral cancer before they advance. Each time you come in for a dental visit with us here at Forest Grove Dental Studio, our dentist, Dr. Jonathan Faris, will perform an oral cancer screening. At Forest Grove Dental Studio we give our patients personalized care.

What does an Oral Cancer Screening Entail?

You will receive an oral cancer screening at your regular dental checkups. We encourage you to see us every six months. During your exam the dentist will use a light, mirror, and tongue depressor to check for any abnormalities like lumps, spots of color, swelling, and any ulcers. The dentist will inspect all parts of the interior of the mouth - inside the cheeks, gums, and tongue. The dentist will also examine your neck, chin, inside and outside of your cheeks. The dentist will also examine your jaw and feel if any lumps are forming.

If the dentist detects any kind of abnormalities, a special dye is used to evaluate more the area for any signs of oral cancer. The main purpose of the test is to detect oral cancer in its initial stages when there is a greater chance for successful treatment. Dr. Jonathan Faris will normally assess your oral health during a routine dental visit to look for any symptoms of oral cancer. We may recommend further testing in some cases to assist in detecting areas of abnormal cell growth in your mouth. This is to keep you safe from any form of ulcers that can later advance to form oral cancer.

Reasons for oral cancer screening

Oral cancer and precancerous lesions that may become mouth cancer are detected early on with oral screenings, and therapy when the lesions are treatable or removed. Oral cancer screenings are more likely to assist those who are at a high risk of oral cancer. A history of sun exposure, which can cause lip cancer and mouth cancer diagnoses in the past, regular alcohol intake, and tobacco use, which includes cigarettes, pipes, and cigars, among other things, are all factors that increase the risk of oral cancer. The number of people diagnosed with cancer has recently increased, especially those with human papillomavirus (HPV).
