Tooth Extraction
Forest Grove, OR

A closeup of an extracted tooth between a set of pliers at Forest Grove Dental Studio in Forest Grove, ORThere is a common misconception that if you are going to get braces you will need to have some teeth extracted first. This will depend on each case; however, most times, you won't need to have an extraction. The best way to find out is to have a consultation with our dentist here at Forest Grove Dental Studio.

When do I need extractions?

There are times when the dentist will recommend that you have tooth extractions when you need to have braces. In some cases, you might have crowded teeth that make it difficult to wear braces. The dentist will recommend extracting one of the crowded teeth so that the other teeth can spread out on the gum line when undergoing treatment. When there are teeth out of place the teeth might have alignment issues, and this may require surgery or tooth extraction. An extraction will help in correcting bite issues and reducing the need for more advanced treatments.

Expectations with braces

When you have crowded teeth, it does not mean that you must have braces. Our dentist will examine your teeth and come up with a personalized treatment plan for you. Depending on the alignment of your teeth, you may need to wear braces 12 to 24 months. Our team will provide support and advise on oral hygiene and maintenance, whether you have traditional braces or Invisalign. Having your teeth straightened can give you the smile you have always wanted. This does not always mean you need to lose a tooth through extraction.

Expectation from extraction

If you do require an extraction, it may be a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. A simple extraction can be done on a tooth that is healthy but emerged from the gum line. The dentist will use forceps to pull the tooth back and forth until it becomes loose then the tooth is pulled out. Simple tooth extraction is done when the tooth is visible, and the dentist uses local anesthesia. This process does not need stitching and the recovery process is fast.

If you have a broken tooth, impacted, or damaged tooth, our dentist will use surgical extraction to pull out the tooth. We will make an incision on the gums and remove the tooth in pieces. The recovery process of a surgical extraction is more complex than a simple extraction. The dentist will recommend the best extraction for you after doing an examination and determining the best treatment option for you.
